How Modern Consciousness Became Disconnected from the Imaginal

Disconnection rarely happens all at once. It unfolds gradually—through subtle shifts in emphasis, through preferences in what a culture values, through the quiet decisions about what forms of knowledge are rewarded and what forms are dismissed. Over time, entire civilizations can tilt in one direction of perception while slowly forgetting another.
Modern consciousness did not reject the Imaginal through hostility or deliberate malice. Rather, it sidelined it in the pursuit of certainty. The focus on the pursuit of certainty reshaped how we understand truth, meaning, and even our place in the universe. It changed everything.
This transformation was not an error. It was a profound breakthrough. However, every tool reshapes the hand that wields it. As measurement became the dominant language through which truth was evaluated, anything that could not be measured felt suspect and began to appear less trustworthy. If a phenomenon could not be quantified, replicated, or externally verified, it was often classified as subjective—and therefore secondary.
